I’ve spoken much about my man crush of Devin Townsend, and this song is one of the biggest reasons for it. In 2006, me and my two brothers got to see Devin and Strapping Young Lad before the band broke up, and before all of our lives changed, for two of us, for the worse.
2006 was before my brother went to Iraq, before he got blown up in a mortar strike (he survived, thankfully), before he fell off a roof and into razor wire (he survived that too), and before his divorce (he almost didn’t survive that). 2006 was before my mental downfall, before I allowed my self worth to fail, and before my own suicide attempt. That day, in 2006, was 3 best friends, 3 brothers, seeing one of their favorite bands live, not caring about what the future held, just caring about having as much fun as possible.
This song closed SYLs set. It was one of the single best songs I’ve seen live. My youngest brother (the one who made it out of everything in one piece) and I at the front of the stage, yelling along to all the songs so much that Devin took notice and made fun of our super fan status. We where so loud, so happy to see SYL live, that the entire band acknowledge us, even taking time to come by our side of the stage to play in front of us and motion at us. Meeting the band afterwards is still one of my favorite moments ever: simply standing in front of my idol was such a big thing for me, but to be able to chat with them like we where old friends was the pinnacle of that day.
Life may have gotten harder since that day, and even though my brother and I almost didn’t make it out of it alive, I can still listen to this song and smile every time, thinking about that one day in 2006, and how simple things where then.
I’m in a music mood now. Its amazing how much music can trigger memories, and most of them all are good memories for me, spending most of my early twenties every weekend in California, following my favorite bands, meeting them, hanging with them, ect. It makes me miss those days, where the only thing I cared about was what show was next, which band was the coolest to hang with, and what merch to get. Life was so much simpler then
I went into his office to turn in some paperwork, and a few people where watching in string his new longbow. I made a comment of “whys everyone watching Odysseus string his bow” before he kicked me out of his office for making a quip.
I thought it was a nice comment, Odysseus was a badass
